Our Bio of the month is someone who’s greatly valued by both AAD Truck & Bus & UD South Africa
Roome ’s story has been a long time in the making and is definitely worth a share. Not many people can lay claim to have stayed true to one brand for 40 years. Today we salute a gentleman who has dedicated his life to the development & progress of South Africa’s favourite truck.
After serving time in the Navy, he moved from Simons’ Town to Pretoria to study Mechanical Engineering. Six months into his studies, he applied for and was accepted as an Engineer at “Datsun Nissan” and in 1981 Roome successfully completed his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Roome ’s career grew as the years passed and in 1981 was promoted to Development Engineer
- Between 1984 and 1992, Roome put his passion for engineering to work
- He moved from Senior Development Engineer to Engineering Manager (Drive-line) in 1992. During this time, the sanction-years put the Mechanical Engineering industry to the test
- Roome along with other well-known names within the UD family was actively involved in the development, installation and testing of ADE and ASTAS transmissions in the Nissan Diesel Model Range
In 1995, the restrictions on importing engines and transmissions were lifted and this resulted in the re-structuring of the Development Engineering industry as a whole. It was then when Roome was transferred to the Aftermarket Department as the Regional Aftermarket Manager for Gauteng and Export territories.
In 2001 he was appointed as Export Manager in the Sales and Technical Support department and later became Senior Manager, overseeing export within Africa. In 2006, he returned to his home town – Cape Town where he was appointed as Senior Manager over the Cape region and hasn’t looked back since.
Roome agrees that the trucking industry has evolved tremendously from the time his career began in 1977. The technology as well as specs of vehicles and trucks in general, have progressed over the last 40 years and he also admitted that the launch of the new UD Croner Range saw him almost unable to contain his excitement.
Roome ’s moto is that every person needs to have “Hoop , Geloof and Liefde”
A fun fact that not many people know about Roome is that he has taken part in no less than 11 Comrades Marathons and 2 Iron Man Challenges.
His moto is that every person needs to have “Hoop , Geloof and Liefde” in everything they do.
Since his appointment in 1977, he has worked for Nissan Datsun, Nissan SA, Magnis Trucks, Truck Makers, Nissan Diesel and UD Trucks. All under one brand. Well done on your 40 years of service Roome – you are a Legend, just like the trucks that you represent! Here’s to the next 40 years.
